Researching Pacific health leadership equity in Aotearoa New Zealand

About

This project examined Pacific health leadership in the Health and Disability sector in Aotearoa New Zealand. Our research employed a qualitative approach, utilising talanoa (dialogue from a Pacific perspective) to gather insights from 50 Pacific leaders in the health and disability sector. Commissioned by the Ministry of Health New Zealand, Mana Pacific was part of the He Waka Eke Noa Consortium led by Francis Health, working alongside Kāhui Tautoko Consultancy and All-Is-For-All.

Insights and Impact

The foundation of Pacific leadership is deeply rooted in the values of family and community, where leadership is seen as a form of service. Strengthening Pacific leadership can lead to better representation and more culturally relevant health services, ultimately improving health outcomes for Pacific people. Further, addressing barriers to leadership development can promote greater equity in the system, ensuring that Pacific voices are heard and valued in shaping policies and practices that impact their lives.

The narratives illustrated how systemic issues such as institutional racism, which create barriers to entry and advancement within leadership positions in the H&D sector. By establishing clear and accessible pathways for Pacific people to enter leadership positions, programs and organisations can ensure a more diverse leadership pool that reflects the communities they serve. Leadership programmes which included mentoring components as well as whole-person development - not just technical skills and knowledge - were seen as more suited.
