New transport solutions strengthen equitable access to healthcare in Tuvalu.
Improving access to healthcare often begins with overcoming everyday challenges, including how people reach essential services. In Tuvalu, a significant step forward is underway through the Tuvalu Health System Strengthening Project (THSSP), implemented by the Ministry of Health & Social Welfare with funding from the World Bank.
As part of this project, Mana Pacific has procured and shipped three vehicles to support health services delivery and patient care: a double-cab pick up (ute) for the Project Management Unity, a tipper truck to support specimen collection and logistics, and a disability-accessible vehicle designed to safely transport patients with limited mobility.
The double-cab ute, intended to support essential health operations, has now arrived in Tuvalu after delays caused by Cyclone Vaianu. Rough seas and challenging weather conditions disrupted shipping across the Pacific, highlighting the realities of transporting vital resources to remote island nations. The tipper truck and disability-accessible vehicle—a 17-seater van customised and modified for wheelchair bound patients—are scheduled to be shipped next.

For many families in Tuvalu, access to healthcare has long been constrained by a lack of safe and reliable transport, particularly for people with disabilities and mobility issues including, older people, or those recovering from illness or injury. Unsealed village roads can be difficult to navigate, especially during wet weather. For those who cannot travel independently, routine appointments can become unreachable, leading to delayed treatment and additional health complications.
The disability-accessible vehicle directly responds to this longstanding gap. Designed to provide safe dignified transport, the van will enable patients who use wheelchairs or have limited mobility to attend clinics, hospitals, and specialist appointments.

The investment reflects a broader commitment to ensuring healthcare access is equitable, inclusive, and responsive to community needs.
Despite weather-related delays, the arrival and shipment of these vehicles marks an important milestone for the THSSP initiative and for families who have long faced barriers simply getting to care. It is a reminder that strengthening health systems includes making sure people can safely reach the services they need.
